The beauty of Alabama is right in our backyard. If you’re looking for the perfect weekend escape that doesn't require a full day of driving, we’ve rounded up five incredible state parks less than three hours away from the Birmingham area.
When you're hauling a massive rig, finding a park with wide roads and long pads is just as important as finding one with great amenities. Whether you're taking your own camper out for a spin or looking for top-tier RV rentals in Alabama, these five spots offer the best mix of big-rig accessibility and family fun.
1. Oak Mountain State Park (Pelham, AL)
Mileage from Birmingham: ~20 Miles (30 Minutes)
Big-Rig Friendly: Yes! You won't encounter steep mountain grades to get into the campground. The sites (especially the recently renovated full-hookup loops) are wide, level, and can easily accommodate 50+ foot rigs with plenty of room for slide-outs.
Kid-Friendly Rating: 10/10. Oak Mountain is the ultimate playground. Kids will love hitting the BMX pump track, swimming at the sandy beach, and visiting the raptors at the Alabama Wildlife Center.
2. Wind Creek State Park (Alexander City, AL)
Mileage from Birmingham: ~75 Miles (1 hour, 20 minutes)
Big-Rig Friendly: Excellent. This park is a massive favorite for the RV camping community, boasting over 500 sites. Sections B, C, and D offer some of the most spacious, premium waterfront pads for larger setups.
Kid-Friendly Rating: 10/10. Situated right on the shores of Lake Martin, it’s a water-lover’s paradise. Families can take advantage of the archery range, massive playgrounds, and designated swimming areas that will easily tire out toddlers and teenagers alike.
3. Cheaha State Park (Delta, AL)
Mileage from Birmingham: ~80 Miles (1 hour, 20 minutes)
Big-Rig Friendly: Good. The drive up to the highest point in Alabama can be steep and winding, so take it slow. Once you arrive, the Upper Improved Campground is your best bet for big rigs, featuring 50-amp service, sewer hookups, and large pull-throughs.
Kid-Friendly Rating: 8/10. The views are absolutely unmatched. The boardwalk trail to Bald Rock is completely stroller-friendly, and in the summer, the public pool is always a massive hit.
4. DeSoto State Park (Fort Payne, AL)
Mileage from Birmingham: ~95 Miles (1 hour, 30 minutes)
Big-Rig Friendly: Very Good. The Improved Campground offers 94 full-hookup sites. Many of them are easy pull-throughs with plenty of room to extend your awnings and set up your patio without brushing against the pines.
Kid-Friendly Rating: 9/10. Between the Civilian Conservation Corps history, the interactive nature center, and the stunning views of DeSoto Falls, it’s an adventure waiting to happen for all ages.
5. Monte Sano State Park (Huntsville, AL)
Mileage from Birmingham: ~105 Miles (1 hour, 45 minutes)
Big-Rig Friendly: Good. Be mindful of the grade coming up Governors Drive. Once you're inside the park, the renovated full-hookup sites are nicely leveled with packed gravel and easily accommodate large motorhomes and fifth wheels.
